Introduction
Acute gastritis in children may be caused by infection with rotavirus or norovirus, or by consuming excessively cold or hot foods, or large amounts of highly acidic or otherwise irritating foods. Main symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting; fever and fatigue may also occur.

Acute gastritis in children is a relatively common gastrointestinal disorder. The causes of acute gastritis in children are varied—it may result from bacterial infection or from consuming excessively cold or spicy foods. If a child exhibits symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, parents are advised to promptly take the child to a hospital for a comprehensive evaluation.

What Causes Acute Gastritis in Children?

Acute gastritis in children may be caused by viral infection or improper diet and can be effectively managed with appropriate medication.

It may be triggered by rotavirus or norovirus infection, or by ingestion of excessively cold or hot foods, or large quantities of highly acidic or otherwise irritating foods. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and possibly fever and fatigue.

Children diagnosed with acute gastritis should visit either the Department of Gastroenterology or the Pediatric Department at a hospital. Diagnosis is typically confirmed through routine blood tests, stool analysis, and pathogen testing. Once diagnosed, treatment—under a physician’s guidance—may include medications such as smectite powder or cimetidine tablets. Smectite powder may also be used adjunctively. During treatment, oral rehydration solutions (e.g., salt-sugar water) are recommended to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Parents should emphasize dietary hygiene and encourage healthy eating habits—avoiding overeating or irregular meals. A balanced diet rich in protein and vitamins is advisable, including foods such as fish, eggs, spinach, and apples.

In most cases, acute gastritis in children stems from bacterial infection or irregular eating patterns. Upon noticing symptoms suggestive of gastritis, parents should seek timely medical care, adjust the child’s dietary habits, ensure adequate sleep, and incorporate regular physical activity into daily life to strengthen immunity.
