Introduction
Pregnant women can benefit from moderate walking, which helps maintain physical health. It is also important to control weight gain to prevent excessive fetal weight gain, as appropriate walking promotes natural vaginal delivery. However, if a pregnant woman experiences symptoms such as threatened miscarriage or threatened preterm labor during pregnancy, or has a low-lying placenta, she should consult her healthcare provider before engaging in any physical activity.

Pregnant women are often advised that appropriate physical activity during pregnancy benefits maternal health, and walking is considered the safest form of exercise during this period. However, not all pregnant women are suitable for walking throughout pregnancy. Expectant mothers experiencing any of the following conditions should avoid walking and instead remain on strict bed rest.

Is It Beneficial for Pregnant Women to Walk More?

Pregnant women may moderately increase their daily walking, which confers health benefits. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight—avoiding excessive fetal weight gain—is advisable, as moderate walking supports vaginal delivery.

However, if a pregnant woman exhibits symptoms of threatened miscarriage or threatened preterm labor, or has a low-lying placenta (placenta previa), she should limit walking to prevent miscarriage or preterm birth. Such women should take calcium supplements orally, get moderate sun exposure, avoid staying up late, manage stress effectively, consume ample fresh vegetables and fruits, and follow a low-salt, low-sugar, low-fat diet. They should also avoid greasy, spicy, or highly stimulating foods and attend routine prenatal check-ups.

During early pregnancy, physicians routinely advise newly diagnosed pregnant women to exercise extra caution and prioritize bed rest, as this stage carries the highest risk of threatened miscarriage. If a pregnant woman notices vaginal bleeding or brownish discharge, experiences abdominal pain, or suffers severe nausea and vomiting, these may indicate threatened miscarriage—and immediate medical attention is essential. Physicians typically prescribe strict bed rest and restrict ambulation.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!
