Introduction
After sustaining a wrestling-related abrasion or skin break, the first step is wound debridement. Medications required for this process include normal saline, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or iodophor. The initial step involves irrigating the wound with normal saline or hydrogen peroxide to remove debris and contaminants from the wound site.

Scrapes and abrasions from falls are common minor injuries in daily life. Generally, they pose no serious health risks, and many heal spontaneously without treatment—though the healing process may take longer. Applying appropriate topical medications can accelerate recovery and promote optimal wound healing. So, what ointments or medications should be used for scrapes and abrasions resulting from falls?

What Medications Should Be Applied to Scrapes and Abrasions from Falls?

After sustaining a scrape or abrasion from a fall, the first step is wound cleansing (debridement). Suitable agents for this purpose include normal saline, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or iodophor.

Step 1: Rinse the wound thoroughly with normal saline or hydrogen peroxide to remove dirt, debris, and contaminants. Next, perform initial disinfection, followed by application of alcohol or iodophor to the wound surface for further disinfection and bacterial control—helping prevent subsequent infection. Finally, cover the wound with sterile gauze.

Additionally, certain wound-healing agents—such as Yunnan Baiyao (a traditional Chinese medicine) or Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment—may serve as useful adjuncts. Erythromycin ointment provides anti-inflammatory effects and can be applied if signs of infection develop.

For relatively small wounds, sterile adhesive bandages (e.g., “Band-Aids”) may be used. Avoid prolonged exposure of the wound to air, as this increases infection risk. Disinfect the wound daily and keep it dry—avoid contact with water.

Patients with skin breaks should avoid strenuous physical activity, prioritize rest, and maintain wound dryness. If the wound becomes wet, promptly dry and clean it to prevent infection or inflammation.

During wound healing, avoid spicy foods, as they may impede recovery.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
