If erythrocytosis stems from chronic hypoxia—such as prolonged residence at high altitude or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—management involves removing the patient from the hypoxic environment and initiating long-term, low-flow oxygen therapy to alleviate the condition. Another cause is polycythemia vera, a myeloproliferative neoplasm requiring cytoreductive therapy with bone marrow–suppressing agents.
