Introduction
In most cases, the rashes observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be completely resolved with prompt and effective treatment, without leaving scars or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These rashes can be effectively treated with antimalarial agents—such as hydroxychloroquine—either alone or in combination with low-dose glucocorticoids.

Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a collective term for chronic, relapsing autoimmune disorders, most commonly affecting women of childbearing age. The hallmark symptom of LE is the “butterfly rash”—a characteristic erythematous lesion across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. The term “lupus” (Latin for “wolf”) originated from the historical belief that this facial rash resembled wounds inflicted by a wolf bite. So, how can these lupus-related skin lesions be eliminated? Below, we address this question.

How to Eliminate Skin Lesions in Lupus Erythematosus

In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), skin lesions—when present—typically resolve completely with prompt and effective treatment, leaving no scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

One exception is discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). DLE represents a distinct cutaneous and mucosal manifestation of SLE. Unlike systemic involvement, DLE usually does not cause multi-organ or multi-system disease; however, local skin lesions often heal with scarring.

Approximately 80% of SLE patients develop various cutaneous or mucosal manifestations during the course of their disease. These lesions respond well to antimalarial agents—such as hydroxychloroquine—either alone or in combination with low-dose glucocorticoids.

Topical corticosteroid creams may also be applied directly to localized rashes to alleviate symptoms. With timely and appropriate therapy, most lesions resolve completely without residual marks. Therefore, patients must maintain confidence in overcoming the disease, preserve an optimistic outlook and balanced mental state, dispel unnecessary anxieties, and consistently adhere to standardized, evidence-based treatment and regular follow-up.

The above outlines approaches to eliminating skin lesions associated with lupus erythematosus. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
