Introduction
What Causes Itchy, Watery Eyes? Itchy eyes accompanied by excessive tearing are most commonly caused by conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is broadly categorized into two main types: infectious and non-infectious. Infectious conjunctivitis is primarily triggered by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogenic microorganisms, leading to inflammation of the conjunctiva. In such cases, identifying the specific causative pathogen is essential.

Itchy eyes are a symptom of ocular disease and represent a characteristic feature of certain eyelid skin and conjunctival disorders—particularly common in anterior segment surface diseases. So, what causes itchy, watery eyes? Let’s explore this together.

What Causes Itchy, Watery Eyes?

Itchy eyes accompanied by excessive tearing are most commonly caused by conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is broadly categorized into infectious and non-infectious types. Infectious conjunctivitis is primarily triggered by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogenic microorganisms, leading to inflammatory responses in the conjunctiva.

In such cases, identifying the specific causative pathogen is essential before selecting an appropriate, pathogen-sensitive medication for treatment. This helps prevent further inflammation from spreading to the cornea, which—if compromised—can lead to visual impairment. The above describes infectious conjunctivitis.

The other type is non-infectious conjunctivitis, typically resulting from physical or chemical irritants or immune-mediated hypersensitivity reactions affecting the conjunctiva. Symptoms often include ocular redness, tearing, intense itching, and sometimes discharge.

Identifying the precise allergen can be challenging; however, antiallergic medications—often dual-action agents—are generally recommended. These may be combined with topical corticosteroids to suppress the immune hypersensitivity response. Additionally, artificial tears help moisturize and nourish the cornea, prevent allergic-induced dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva, and dilute allergens.

We hope the above information is helpful to you.
