Introduction
Patients with urticaria generally have no problem coming into contact with cold water. However, there is a specific type of urticaria called cold urticaria, in which patients should avoid contact with cold water as much as possible. Cold urticaria is triggered by exposure to cold substances—such as taking a cold shower or washing hands with cold water—and manifests as urticarial lesions following such cold exposure.

Hello! Urticaria—commonly known as “wind rash” or “hives”—is a prevalent allergic skin disorder caused by various triggers that lead to transient inflammatory hyperemia and substantial fluid exudation from cutaneous and mucosal blood vessels. So, can individuals with urticaria come into contact with cold water? Let’s explore this further.

Can individuals with urticaria contact cold water?

In general, patients with urticaria may safely contact cold water. However, there is a specific subtype—cold-induced urticaria—in which patients should strictly avoid cold water exposure. Cold-induced urticaria is triggered upon contact with low-temperature substances, such as during cold-water bathing or handwashing.

During cold winter months, affected individuals may develop localized edema—typically on exposed areas such as the face and hands—which usually resolves spontaneously within approximately 15 minutes, alongside the disappearance of hives. Additionally, patients with cold-induced urticaria may experience gastrointestinal symptoms—including abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and diarrhea—as well as dizziness, headache, syncope, or even anaphylactic shock. Therefore, individuals diagnosed with cold-induced urticaria must strictly avoid contact with cold water.
