Can astigmatism resolve naturally?
Astigmatism is a refractive error of the eye. Numerous factors can cause astigmatism, including poor daily eye habits—such as frequently rubbing the eyes or reading while lying down.
Can astigmatism resolve spontaneously?
Astigmatism cannot resolve spontaneously. Once it develops, the degree of astigmatism often progressively increases. Without intervention, high astigmatism may develop, significantly impairing visual function. Therefore, never rely on spontaneous resolution—prompt medical evaluation and correction are essential. Correction options include optical methods (e.g., glasses or contact lenses) and surgical procedures; the optimal approach should be selected based on individual ocular characteristics.

Ideally, cycloplegic refraction should be performed first to allow the ophthalmologist to assess your precise refractive status—including the magnitude and axis of astigmatism—as well as determine its type (regular vs. irregular). Both spectacles and corneal contact lenses provide effective correction for regular astigmatism; however, irregular astigmatism can only be corrected with contact lenses—not spectacles. Additionally, increase outdoor activity time and avoid prolonged near-vision tasks.
