Introduction
First, improper eye-use posture is undoubtedly a major factor. For instance, many people today are “head-down” smartphone users—frequently looking down at their phones while commuting, holding phones in bed after returning home, and using phones while lying down or sitting. Second, many people enjoy playing video games, and some even play while lying face-down on beds or sofas. However, this habit is detrimental to eye health.

Astigmatism is an eye condition affecting an increasing number of people today, significantly impairing daily life. According to relevant statistical data, approximately 25–30% of adolescents suffer from refractive errors, and many of these cases are accompanied by astigmatism—meaning a substantial proportion of adolescents experience both myopia and astigmatism simultaneously. So, what causes astigmatism? Let’s explore the underlying reasons below.

What Causes Astigmatism?

First and foremost, it’s important to clarify that myopia itself does not cause astigmatism. However, because the factors contributing to astigmatism often resemble those associated with myopia, many mistakenly assume that myopia leads to astigmatism. The actual causes of astigmatism include:

1. Incorrect eye-use posture: For instance, many people today are “head-down” smartphone users who frequently look downward while using mobile devices. Upon returning home, they continue holding their phones while lying down or sitting—activities that place excessive strain on the eyes. Therefore, maintaining proper eye-use posture in daily life is essential.

2. Excessive screen time, especially during gaming: Both boys and girls increasingly engage in prolonged gaming sessions on smartphones and tablets. With technological advances, many now habitually play while lying in bed or lounging on the sofa—postures detrimental to ocular health. Although most people recognize these habits as harmful, they persist nonetheless. Consequently, many children now require thick corrective lenses at a very young age.

We hope the above information proves helpful to you.
