Where are the arteries in the hand?

Introduction
There are two prominent arteries at the wrist: the ulnar artery and the radial artery. The radial artery lies on the thumb side of the wrist, located precisely on the medial (inner) side of the radial styloid process—a bony projection of the radius bone at the wrist. To palpate it more easily, use the tips of three fingers to feel along this medial aspect of the radial styloid process.

There are numerous blood vessels in the hand; thus, even a minor injury may easily lacerate a vessel, resulting in bleeding. If an artery is accidentally cut, the bleeding can become significantly more severe. So, where exactly are the arteries located in the hand?

Where Are the Arteries Located in the Hand?

Arteries are blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to body tissues and organs. Typically, they lie relatively deep beneath the skin and are not easily palpable. The most accessible and readily identifiable arterial location in the hand is at the wrist—where pulse palpation is routinely performed. Gently pressing with your fingertips will allow you to feel the rhythmic pulsation of the radial artery. Generally, this artery lies approximately two finger-widths proximal to the base of the palm (i.e., near the wrist crease), at a depth of about 0.5 cm. Because arteries reside somewhat deeper than superficial structures, if the pulse is difficult to detect, estimating their approximate location based on anatomical landmarks (e.g., distance from the wrist crease) can be helpful.

Arteries are classified and distributed throughout the body in various ways. While arteries are present in the hands, they also exist—albeit in varying numbers—in other regions of the body. Among them, the major arteries play the most critical role in systemic circulation; therefore, it is essential to recognize their locations to avoid accidental injury. Additionally, arteries may become obstructed (e.g., due to atherosclerosis). Certain dietary choices may help alleviate or prevent arterial blockage—for instance, regularly consuming broccoli may support arterial health and reduce the risk of vascular diseases.

The above explanation addresses the question: “Where are the arteries located in the hand?” We hope this information is helpful to you.
