What Causes Pain on the Left Side of the Neck?
Persistent, unexplained pain on the left side of the neck—sometimes recurring—is a common complaint. What could be causing it? The left side of the neck comprises skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, ligaments, and bone; most neck pain originates from abnormalities in the muscles, ligaments, or bony structures.
What Causes Pain on the Left Side of the Neck?
The primary causes of neck pain include the following:

1. Prolonged maintenance of a single posture—for example, working at a computer or frequently bending the head downward while writing—can overstrain the neck muscles, leading to pain.
2. Weak neck muscles, insufficient to adequately support the cervical spine.
3. Exposure of the left side of the neck to cold temperatures—or general coldness in the hands—may trigger pain. Chronic cold exposure can also lead to asymmetry between the left and right sides of the neck. This condition is more prevalent during autumn and winter, when cold pathogens easily invade the body; inadequate protection against cold increases susceptibility to chilling and subsequent pain.
4. An improperly sized pillow—either too high or too low—can cause excessive stretching of the neck muscles and ligaments, commonly known as “wry neck” or “stiff neck.”
5. Trauma to the left side of the neck—such as impact or collision—may also induce pain.
If these issues remain unresolved over time, persistent left-sided neck pain may develop and, in the long term, contribute to cervical spine disorders and intervertebral disc disease. Therefore, timely attention and intervention are essential. When experiencing pain, prioritize adequate rest and perform gentle, appropriate physical activity to prevent cervical fatigue. For noticeable pain, Jinfukang Granules (a traditional Chinese medicine) may be taken to promote circulation, unblock meridians, invigorate blood flow, and resolve stasis. Additionally, topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—such as diclofenac sodium or ibuprofen—can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
