Introduction
Leg pain, soreness, and numbness may be caused by conditions such as rheumatic arthritis or varicose veins. 1. Rheumatic arthritis is typically a common acute or chronic inflammatory disorder of connective tissue. It is associated with infection by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, and factors such as cold and dampness may trigger the disease.

Leg pain and numbness are relatively common clinical complaints, often resulting from falls, injuries, or accidental trauma. Additionally, such symptoms may stem from peripheral arterial disease or other underlying medical conditions. So, what specific causes might lead to leg pain and numbness in patients?

What Causes Leg Ache, Pain, and Numbness?

Leg ache, pain, and numbness may be caused by conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or varicose veins.

1. Rheumatoid arthritis: This is a common acute or chronic inflammatory disorder of connective tissue, frequently associated with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection. Cold, damp environments and other environmental factors may trigger or exacerbate the condition. Patients typically experience knee joint pain, accompanied by bilateral leg soreness and numbness. Severe cases may also present with generalized fatigue, loss of appetite, and irritability. Under a physician’s guidance, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—such as ibuprofen sustained-release tablets or aspirin tablets—may be prescribed. Additionally, local heat application using a hot water bottle or heated salt pack can effectively alleviate symptoms.

2. Varicose veins: These commonly develop due to prolonged standing or sitting, or heavy physical labor. Clinically, superficial veins become tortuous and visibly bulge above the skin surface, resembling earthworms. Patients often report leg soreness, prickling sensations, numbness, and intense itching; severe cases may progress to ulceration. Surgical interventions—including high ligation of the great saphenous vein and localized excision of varicose veins—are available at hospitals.

In daily life, patients are encouraged to consume vitamin-rich foods, such as tomatoes, oranges, and grapefruits.
