Precautions for Complete Blood Count (CBC) Testing
A complete blood count (CBC) is a diagnostic test performed by drawing peripheral blood from the patient to examine the quantity, morphology, and proportions of various blood cells.
Precautions for a Complete Blood Count
1. Maintain Skin Cleanliness
Ensure the skin at the intended blood-draw site is thoroughly cleaned. Allow the area to dry completely before venipuncture to minimize infection risk. In cold weather, gently warm the skin by rubbing it prior to blood collection.

2. Fast Before Blood Collection
Fasting is required before CBC testing to ensure accurate results. Avoid consuming fatty foods the evening before the test; fasting must begin after 8 p.m. On the morning of the examination, only plain water is permitted.
3. Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing
Wear loose-sleeved clothing on the day of the CBC test to facilitate venipuncture. Ensure clothing is clean to prevent needle-site infection. Avoid contact with water at the puncture site for 24 hours post-procedure.
4. Avoid Strenuous Exercise
Refrain from vigorous physical activity prior to blood collection. Intense exercise accelerates blood flow and may cause white blood cells adhering to vessel walls to detach and enter circulation, thereby elevating peripheral white blood cell counts and potentially interfering with test accuracy.

The above outlines key precautions for CBC testing. After blood collection, apply firm pressure to the gauze pad for at least five minutes to achieve hemostasis. Do not bend the elbow to stop bleeding, nor twist or roll the gauze, as this may cause subcutaneous bruising. If bruising (ecchymosis) appears around the puncture site, apply warm compresses after 24 hours. To prevent infection, keep the puncture site dry for 24 hours. We hope this information proves helpful.
