Introduction
Herpes zoster (shingles) is not contagious to others in the same way as chickenpox; however, the varicella-zoster virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the fluid from active shingles blisters. Transmission typically does not occur without such contact. Susceptibility to infection and severity of symptoms also depend on an individual’s immune status—immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk for more severe disease. Severe cases may adversely affect overall health and can lead to intensified local pruritus (itching).

Some individuals neglect hygiene of their genital areas and engage in unhygienic sexual activity, making them highly susceptible to viral herpes zoster. Is viral herpes zoster contagious to others?

Is viral herpes zoster contagious?

Yes, viral herpes zoster is contagious. Transmission primarily occurs through direct contact; it generally does not spread without physical contact. Susceptibility also depends on an individual’s immune status—when immunity declines, symptoms may become more severe. Severe symptoms can harm overall health and exacerbate localized itching.

If vesicles and pain develop due to viral herpes zoster, antiviral and neurotrophic medications may be prescribed under a physician’s guidance. Commonly used antiviral agents include acyclovir and related drugs; neurotrophic agents often include B-complex vitamins to help prevent neurological complications. For severe localized pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen may be used for symptomatic relief.

In daily life, it is essential to maintain good personal hygiene habits. Avoid frequent unhygienic sexual activity, and limit intake of greasy or spicy foods; instead, opt for light, bland meals to prevent worsening of local infection. We hope this information is helpful to you.
