Introduction
Causes of blood-tinged nasal discharge: 1. Dryness or inflammation of the nasal mucosa, leading to recurrent infections, damage to the mucosa and capillaries, and consequently minor bleeding mixed with nasal discharge. 2. Nasal tumors, such as hemangiomas, inverted papillomas, infectious nasal polyps, or lymphomas. 3. Nasopharyngeal tumors—blood-tinged postnasal drip (i.e., blood drawn backward into the throat) is a common initial symptom. 4. Trauma to the nasal mucosa caused by nose-picking, resulting in local injury and bleeding.

Nasal mucus serves as a protective barrier for the body, preventing nasal mucosal dryness and trapping harmful substances inhaled through the nose. So why does nasal mucus sometimes contain blood?

Why Does Nasal Mucus Contain Blood?

Causes of blood-tinged nasal mucus include: 1. Dryness or inflammation of the nasal mucosa, leading to recurrent infections, damage to the mucosa and capillaries, and resulting in minor bleeding mixed with nasal discharge. 2. Nasal tumors—such as hemangiomas, inverted papillomas, infectious nasal polyps, or lymphomas. 3. Nasopharyngeal tumors—blood-tinged postnasal drip (often perceived as “blood drawn from the back of the throat”) is a common initial symptom. 4. Trauma to the nasal mucosa caused by nose-picking, resulting in local injury and bleeding. 5. Hematologic disorders—typically associated with larger volumes of bleeding, difficulty achieving hemostasis, and recurrent episodes.

If you experience epistaxis (nosebleeds), rinsing the nasal cavity with normal saline may help control blood-tinged mucus. Blood in nasal secretions is often attributable to nasal mucosal dryness—particularly common in cold, dry climates (e.g., in East Asia), where low humidity damages the nasal mucosa and triggers bleeding. This condition generally resolves readily. Using menthol-based nasal drops may provide symptomatic relief. Avoid spicy foods during this time. Importantly, refrain from picking your nose, as this can exacerbate bleeding.

In daily life, maintain a light, easily digestible diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits high in vitamins, and minimize consumption of snacks. Drink plenty of warm water to promote metabolism and facilitate the elimination of toxins from the body. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
