How to Relieve Swelling in the Lower Legs During Pregnancy
Many pregnant women experience swelling (edema) in the lower legs during pregnancy—a common and usually harmless occurrence that typically resolves gradually after delivery. How can leg edema during pregnancy be relieved?
How to Relieve Lower-Leg Edema During Pregnancy
Pregnancy-related lower-leg edema can be alleviated through warm compresses and gentle massage, both of which help improve circulation in the legs and reduce swelling. For edema caused by malnutrition, increasing intake of protein-rich foods is recommended. Pregnant women with leg swelling should maintain a light, nutritious diet and adhere to a low-sodium regimen, as excessive salt intake can exacerbate or impede resolution of edema.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes—including increased secretion of estrogen and aldosterone—lead to greater retention of water and sodium in the body, predisposing women to edema. Additionally, total blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy, while red blood cell mass expands to a lesser extent than plasma volume, and plasma protein levels remain unchanged. These physiological shifts contribute to lower-leg edema. Edema in pregnancy can be classified as either “overt” (pitting) or “covert” (non-pitting). Overt edema manifests as taut, shiny skin with reduced elasticity; pressing on the swollen area leaves an indentation (pitting), beginning at the ankles and progressing upward to involve the calves, thighs, and even the abdomen. Covert edema shows no visible signs on the skin surface; instead, excess fluid accumulates in interstitial spaces and deep connective tissues, often accompanied by rapid weight gain.

While resting during pregnancy, women should adopt the left lateral decubitus position and elevate their legs using pillows to help reduce edema. Maintaining balanced nutrition, avoiding spicy or irritating foods, and engaging in appropriate physical activity are also beneficial. We hope this information is helpful to you.
