Introduction
Nosebleeds in pregnant women may result from dry or cold weather, cold air irritating the nasal mucosa, unhealthy habits, or frequent anger—factors that can cause the nasal blood vessels to rupture due to external stimuli. Additionally, structural abnormalities such as a deviated nasal septum or nasal vascular tumors may also lead to epistaxis. Pregnant women experiencing nosebleeds should first visit a hospital for evaluation to determine the underlying cause and avoid excessive anxiety or emotional stress.

Pregnancy is a unique physiological period. When nosebleeds occur, expectant mothers often worry whether the fetus may be adversely affected. So, what causes nosebleeds during pregnancy?

What Causes Nosebleeds During Pregnancy?

Nosebleeds in pregnant women may result from dry or cold weather, cold air irritating the nasal mucosa, unhealthy habits (e.g., frequent nose-picking), or emotional stress such as frequent anger—any of which can cause trauma-induced rupture and bleeding of nasal blood vessels. Additionally, structural abnormalities such as deviated nasal septum or nasal vascular tumors may also lead to epistaxis.

If nosebleeds occur during pregnancy, the first step is to visit a hospital for evaluation to identify the underlying cause—this helps prevent excessive anxiety and emotional tension, both of which may negatively impact fetal development. For mild epistaxis, gently pack the bleeding nostril with clean cotton, and wash your face (especially the nose) with cold water; cold exposure induces local vasoconstriction, thereby helping stop the bleeding. In cases of more severe bleeding, apply firm pressure to both sides of the nasal alae using the thumb and index finger, and place a cold towel on the forehead to assist hemostasis. If severe bleeding persists despite these measures, immediate medical attention is essential. Should blood drain into the mouth, do not swallow it—spit it out instead.

Gently massaging the nose daily may help improve nasal circulation by promoting meridian flow. Drinking warm water regularly supports healthy metabolism. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
