How long after a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure can sexual intercourse resume?
In today’s society, some women wish to terminate pregnancy for various reasons after becoming pregnant. When gestation is advanced, dilation and curettage (D&C) becomes the only viable option. After undergoing a D&C procedure, how long should one wait before resuming sexual intercourse?
How Long After a D&C Can One Resume Sexual Intercourse?
Generally speaking, the timing for resuming sexual activity after a D&C depends closely on the specific type of D&C performed and the patient’s clinical condition. In most cases—provided there are no complications—sexual intercourse may be safely resumed approximately two weeks post-procedure.

Dilation and curettage procedures fall into two main categories: induced-abortion D&C and non-abortion D&C. Following an abortion-related D&C, a routine follow-up pelvic ultrasound is recommended two weeks postoperatively. If the ultrasound shows no retained tissue and the patient experiences no abnormal vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, or fever, sexual intercourse may be resumed. Non-abortion D&C refers to procedures performed due to menstrual disorders—for example, abnormal uterine bleeding requiring endometrial sampling. In such cases, treatment decisions are typically guided by histopathological findings obtained after surgery. Generally, if no vaginal bleeding occurs within one to two weeks postoperatively, sexual intercourse may be resumed. However, if symptoms such as abdominal pain or fever develop, prompt gynecologic evaluation is essential. Should physical examination reveal thickening or tenderness in the adnexal region, or uterine tenderness, infection should be suspected—and sexual intercourse must be avoided until the infection is fully treated.

After a D&C, women should maintain strict personal hygiene: wash the external genitalia daily with warm water, change undergarments frequently, and keep the perineal area clean and dry. Cold or raw foods should be avoided; sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited during recovery. Adequate rest, sufficient sleep, and proper nutrition are also essential.
