Introduction
Facial swelling refers to edema or puffiness of the face, which may result from chronic nephritis or other factors such as excessive fluid intake, insufficient sleep, high salt consumption, or excessive stress. Facial and generalized edema are common manifestations of chronic nephritis. Additionally, drinking too much water before bedtime can also lead to facial swelling.

It is quite common to wake up and find one’s face swollen—a phenomenon that can be particularly distressing, especially when the underlying cause remains unclear. So, what causes facial swelling?

Causes of Facial Swelling

Facial swelling—also referred to as facial edema or puffiness—can stem from various factors. It may result from chronic nephritis, but it can also be triggered by excessive water intake, insufficient sleep, high salt consumption, or excessive stress. In patients with chronic nephritis, facial and generalized edema are relatively common manifestations. Drinking too much water before bedtime can likewise lead to morning facial puffiness. Similarly, frequent late-night sleeping or inadequate sleep duration often results in facial swelling upon waking the next day. Excess dietary salt impairs the body’s ability to excrete water, thereby contributing to facial swelling. Moreover, chronic stress can impair metabolic function, hindering the efficient elimination of toxins and metabolic waste—another potential contributor to facial swelling.

To alleviate facial swelling, it is essential first to maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule and avoid staying up late. Also, limit fluid intake before bedtime. If swelling is due to chronic nephritis, prompt medical treatment is necessary.

Applying a warm towel compress to the face can also help reduce swelling. Warm compresses promote local blood circulation, facilitating faster resolution of puffiness. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
