What causes chest tightness and shortness of breath after surgery?
Chest tightness and shortness of breath after surgery may result from physiological or pathological factors, among others. The most common causes include the following:
1. Physiological factors: Emotional influences are often involved. Some patients experience anxiety, tension, excessive worry, or fear before, during, or after surgery, which may trigger chest tightness. These symptoms typically resolve spontaneously within approximately 2–3 days postoperatively.
2. Pathological factors: Postoperative chronic inflammatory conditions—such as bronchitis or bronchopneumonia—should be considered, as they commonly present with palpitations, cough, and sputum production. Additionally, complications related to intraoperative bleeding must be ruled out.
Postoperative wound care is also essential. Until the wound has fully healed, avoid contact with water. The wound site may be gently cleansed daily with clean water or an antibacterial soap. Dietary adjustments are recommended: opt for light, easily digestible foods; increase intake of fresh vegetables and fruits; and consume adequate protein-rich foods such as eggs, legumes, and fish. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided entirely; alcohol intake is especially discouraged after surgery.
