Introduction
Sudden, significant eyebrow loss may result from excessive mental stress, severe malnutrition, or alopecia areata, among other causes. Excessive stress can disrupt hormonal secretion; prolonged malnutrition leads to general physical weakness and impairs the eyebrows’ ability to absorb energy and nutrients. Eyebrow loss may also be caused by alopecia areata or leprosy. Patients should adopt healthy lifestyle habits and learn effective stress-relief techniques.

In general, sudden, significant eyebrow hair loss may result from excessive psychological stress, severe malnutrition, alopecia areata, or other underlying causes. Specific etiologies include the following:
  1. Psychological stress: Under chronic psychological stress, hair follicles undergo significant changes and become nutritionally compromised, leading to impaired hair development and premature entry of hairs into the telogen (resting) phase—resulting in hair shedding.

2. Severe malnutrition: Prolonged malnutrition weakens the body and impairs the eyebrows’ ability to absorb essential energy and nutrients. Patients should enrich their daily diet with protein- and vitamin-rich foods; gradual dietary adjustments typically lead to improvement over time. Women undergoing prolonged weight-loss regimens may experience substantial depletion of bodily protein and iron stores, which can indirectly contribute to eyebrow loss.
  3. Alopecia areata: Eyebrow loss may be caused by alopecia areata or, less commonly, leprosy. If whitening of eyebrow hairs at the root precedes shedding, alopecia areata is likely. In some cases, patients with alopecia areata experience sudden, overnight eyebrow loss. Such cases warrant prompt medical evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment.
Chronic, excessive psychological stress can disrupt endocrine function, potentially triggering acne or eyebrow loss. Therefore, patients are advised to adopt healthy lifestyle habits—including adequate hydration, increased intake of fruits and vegetables, and regular physical activity—to help alleviate stress.
