Introduction
For pneumonia, it is beneficial to consume fresh vegetables and fruits. Drinking warm water during pneumonia helps promote blood circulation. Eating more congee (rice porridge) nourishes the body and is easily digestible. Fruits rich in vitamin C—such as sweet oranges and regular oranges—support recovery from inflammation. Avoid excessively cold foods or beverages, as they may trigger or worsen coughing. Consume protein-rich foods like eggs and lean meat to boost immunity, but avoid overly greasy options.

Pneumonia is a relatively common, frequently occurring infectious disease. In severe cases, it can endanger life and health. What should patients eat to aid recovery?

What Should Patients with Pneumonia Eat?

Patients with pneumonia should consume fresh vegetables and fruits. During illness, drinking warm water helps promote blood circulation; consuming congee (rice porridge) nourishes the body and is easily digestible. Fruits rich in vitamin C—such as pears, apples, tangerines, and oranges—support recovery from inflammation. Avoid overly cold foods, which may trigger or worsen coughing. Increase intake of protein-rich foods—including eggs and lean meats—to bolster immunity, but avoid excessively greasy options. Fever often accompanies pneumonia; therefore, physical cooling measures and adequate rest are essential. Avoid overly salty, sweet, or spicy foods, as they may irritate the airways and exacerbate coughing and inflammation.

The primary symptoms of pneumonia include fever and marked fatigue—patients often feel extremely weak—as well as coughing, sputum production, and occasionally hemoptysis (coughing up blood). Generally, pneumonia differs from tracheitis primarily in that fever and fatigue are far more pronounced in pneumonia, whereas cough and sputum production tend to be milder—or even absent—thus distinguishing it clearly from tracheitis.

In severe pneumonia, some patients may develop dyspnea (shortness of breath) or even respiratory failure, causing significant damage to multiple organ systems—including heart failure and renal failure. During recovery, ample bed rest is crucial, along with increased intake of warm boiled water.
