Introduction
A dry cough refers to a cough that occurs without the production of sputum or other associated symptoms. It may present as either paroxysmal or persistent coughing, commonly triggered by discomfort in the respiratory mucosa—such as dryness, irritation, or a burning sensation. Severe dry cough may be accompanied by dizziness, headache, and dry retching. It is observed in conditions including acute and chronic pharyngitis, acute and chronic laryngitis, laryngeal cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

In daily life, many people are frequently observed experiencing dry coughs, which can be quite embarrassing. Dry coughs may adversely affect both personal life and work to varying degrees. But what exactly is a dry cough?

What Is a Dry Cough?

A dry cough refers to a cough that occurs without the production of phlegm or sputum. It may present as either paroxysmal (episodic) or persistent. Common causes include dryness, irritation, or a burning sensation in the respiratory mucosa. Severe cases of dry cough may be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and dry retching. Conditions associated with dry cough include acute and chronic pharyngitis, acute and chronic laryngitis, laryngeal cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

An acute onset of dry cough may indicate an infection—either viral or bacterial—which can cause dry cough along with symptoms such as fever, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and generalized myalgia. Such cases require anti-infective therapy, including antiviral or antibacterial medications. Secondly, allergy is the most common cause of dry cough. Some patients develop airway hyperresponsiveness following an infection; thus, exposure to cold air—even after successful infection treatment—may trigger a period of dry cough, necessitating antiallergic therapy. Additionally, certain medications may induce dry cough as a side effect—for example, some antihypertensive drugs. Discontinuing these medications often leads to symptom relief.

If you experience recurrent dry cough, avoid consuming excessively cold or spicy foods, as these may exacerbate symptoms. When outdoors—especially on hazy days with high airborne particulate levels—wear a protective mask. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
