What causes recurrent boils on the face?
It is essential to identify the underlying cause of facial pustules accurately. The most common cause—particularly among adolescents and adults—is acne vulgaris (commonly known as “acne” or “pimples”). Acne typically manifests as papules, pustules, papulopustules, or cysts on the face, chest, and back.
Another frequent cause is localized bacterial infection—especially *Staphylococcus aureus* or *Streptococcus* infection—leading to impetigo or folliculitis. Folliculitis often presents as red papules with a central pustular head, while impetigo may appear as superficial pustules.
In such cases, anti-infective treatment is required—for example, disinfection with iodophor followed by topical application of mupirocin ointment (e.g., Bactroban®). Given the wide range of possible causes, accurate diagnosis is critical. If you are uncertain about the nature of the pustules, it is strongly recommended to consult a dermatologist in person at a hospital.
