Introduction
In addition to their contraceptive function, male condoms can block or prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and cross-infection between sexual partners. They are highly effective in preventing a range of STIs, including HIV/AIDS, syphilis, mycoplasma infection, chlamydial vaginitis, gonorrhea, human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases, and vaginal parasitic infections—such as pubic lice (phthiriasis).

Condoms are an effective method for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but they do not offer 100% protection. Sexual intercourse is a relatively complex process, and unexpected incidents may occasionally occur. Can condoms prevent STIs?

Can condoms prevent sexually transmitted infections?

In addition to their contraceptive function, male condoms can also block or prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and cross-infection between sexual partners. They are highly effective in preventing a range of STIs, including HIV/AIDS, syphilis, mycoplasma and chlamydia infections (e.g., chlamydial vaginitis), gonorrhea, human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases, and parasitic vaginal infections such as pubic lice. Therefore, consistent and correct condom use effectively reduces the risk of cross-infection between sexual partners.

If a condom breaks or is of poor quality—leading to leakage—it may result in contraceptive failure and fail to prevent STIs. Additionally, during intercourse, a condom may slip off inside the vagina, further compromising its protective effect against STIs. Certain infections—such as syphilis and gonorrhea—can be transmitted via kissing or skin-to-skin contact; therefore, condom use alone cannot fully prevent these infections.

Proper condom use is also essential. Before use, inflate the condom slightly to check for leaks, and expel any air from the tip reservoir. Select a condom size that fits appropriately—not too large nor too small—and never reuse a condom. Thus, it is crucial to understand and practice correct condom selection and usage techniques.
