Introduction
Keratosis pilaris (commonly known as “chicken skin”) can be treated, under a physician’s guidance, with specialized topical agents such as salicylic acid ointment and cod liver oil ointment. Salicylic acid ointment is one of the commonly used over-the-counter topical treatments for keratosis pilaris. Clinically, salicylic acid ointments with concentrations of 3%–5% are recognized for their keratolytic and keratoplasty-softening effects, thereby helping to improve keratosis pilaris. However, excessive or widespread application may lead to systemic salicylism (salicylic acid toxicity).

A subset of individuals, due to genetic factors, may have a skin condition known as keratosis pilaris—commonly referred to as “chicken skin.” This condition is characterized primarily by rough, bumpy skin texture, which can affect the local aesthetic appearance. What are the most effective medications for treating keratosis pilaris?

What Are the Most Effective Medications for Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris can be treated under medical supervision with topical agents such as salicylic acid ointment or cod liver oil ointment—both considered effective therapeutic options. Salicylic acid ointment is one of the commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) treatments for this condition. Clinically, salicylic acid ointments at concentrations of 3%–5% are recognized for their keratolytic and keratoplastic effects—i.e., they help dissolve and soften excess keratin, thereby improving the appearance of keratosis pilaris. After cleansing the affected area, apply an appropriate amount of the ointment. However, note that excessive or prolonged use may lead to systemic salicylism, manifesting as confusion, disorientation, dizziness, shortness of breath, headache, or tinnitus. Therefore, strict adherence to the prescribing physician’s instructions—or the product labeling—is essential to avoid overuse. Special caution is advised for pregnant women, women planning pregnancy, and lactating mothers.

Cod liver oil ointment—typically formulated at concentrations of 10%–20%—is also used in the management of keratosis pilaris. As a skin-nourishing agent, it provides nutritional support and protective benefits, helps lubricate the skin, and promotes granulation tissue formation. In addition to improving keratosis pilaris, it may also be beneficial for treating dry, fissured skin and ichthyosis, as well as burns, ulcers, and radiation-induced dermatitis.

When used for keratosis pilaris, cod liver oil ointment is generally considered safe, with no prominent adverse effects reported; thus, it is suitable for most patients. We hope this information proves helpful!
