Introduction
Diabetic patients may take the Mai Dong Dang Shen Tang (Ophiopogon and Codonopsis Decoction). Codonopsis root tonifies the Qi of the Spleen and Lungs, nourishes the Blood, and generates Body Fluids; thus, it is indicated for diabetes-related syndromes characterized by depletion of Body Fluids and excessive thirst. Codonopsis root may elevate blood glucose levels, an effect associated with its naturally occurring sugar content. Its nature and flavor are sweet and neutral; at conventional therapeutic doses, it generally exerts no significant impact on blood glucose. For example, although diabetic patients are advised to limit intake of sugary foods, this does not preclude the use of Codonopsis root.

In daily life, many individuals with diabetes or hyperglycemia must carefully regulate their diet due to their condition. Certain foods may exacerbate their symptoms. So, can people with diabetes consume a decoction made from Astragalus membranaceus (Huang Qi), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong), and Codonopsis pilosula (Dang Shen)?

Can People with Diabetes Consume Mai Dong–Dang Shen Decoction?

Individuals with diabetes may consume Mai Dong–Dang Shen decoction. Dang Shen tonifies the Qi of the Spleen and Lungs, nourishes Blood, and promotes the production of Body Fluids; thus, it is suitable for treating diabetes-related syndromes characterized by depletion of Body Fluids and excessive thirst. Although Dang Shen possesses mild blood glucose–elevating effects—attributable partly to its natural sugar content—it is sweet and neutral in nature, and standard therapeutic doses typically do not adversely affect blood glucose control. For instance, while diabetic patients are advised to limit dietary sugars, this does not preclude them from taking herbal preparations containing small amounts of naturally occurring sugars. We recommend that diabetic patients consistently take prescribed antihyperglycemic medications to maintain blood glucose levels within the normal range. Mai Dong nourishes Yin and generates Body Fluids, clears Heat from the Heart and Lungs, calms irritability, and moistens the Stomach and Intestines to relieve dry cough and dryness.

Dietary management for individuals with diabetes is highly stringent. Patients should ensure regular physical activity each day. Nutritional intake must remain balanced and consistent, emphasizing a low-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates should constitute approximately 50% of total daily caloric intake, while fat intake should be kept low. Fried foods should be avoided or consumed sparingly. Instead, patients should prioritize foods rich in high-quality protein, vitamins, dietary fiber, and appropriate minerals.

Individuals with diabetes or hyperglycemia should engage in regular physical exercise to enhance immune function and overall resistance. They should also pay close attention to dietary habits—avoiding excessive consumption of high-sugar and high-fat foods—to prevent further harm to their health. We hope this information proves helpful to you!
