Dyshidrotic eczema may represent a hypersensitivity reaction resembling eczema, primarily affecting the palms, soles, and lateral aspects of fingers and toes. Clinically, it manifests as tiny, rice-grain-sized vesicles. Initially, the vesicular fluid is clear, gradually becoming cloudy; adjacent vesicles may coalesce into larger blisters. Upon drying, annular scaling typically develops. Patients commonly experience pruritus (itching) and a burning sensation. The condition frequently flares during seasonal transitions and is often associated with excessive sweating of the hands and feet.

Exposure to water or chemical cleaning agents may markedly exacerbate dyshidrotic eczema; wearing gloves can also worsen symptoms. After handwashing, patients should apply generous amounts of emollient moisturizer. For mild cases, proper skin care is crucial—namely, reducing handwashing frequency while increasing application of emollients—to facilitate gradual resolution. In more severe cases, topical ointments may be prescribed. Psychological stress, infections, allergic predisposition, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and genetic factors are all implicated in the pathogenesis of dyshidrotic eczema. Therefore, minimizing emotional tension, controlling hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and avoiding contact with irritants play important roles in both prevention and symptom relief.

Patients should avoid spicy, pungent, and otherwise irritating foods, and refrain from consuming “trigger” foods (i.e., foods traditionally believed to provoke or aggravate dermatological conditions).
