Normally, the human blood pH ranges from 7.35 to 7.45, reflecting a slightly alkaline state; whereas the normal urinary pH range is 4.6–8.0, reflecting a slightly acidic state.

What Does Low pH Mean?

A low pH typically refers to a decreased pH value detected in routine urinalysis—indicating acidic urine. Clinically, low pH is categorized into two types: low blood pH and low urinary pH. Normally, arterial blood pH ranges from 7.35 to 7.45 (slightly alkaline), while urinary pH normally ranges from 4.6 to 8.0 (slightly acidic). The body’s capacity to regulate acid-base balance has physiological limits. A low pH indicates disruption of this equilibrium and may be associated with various underlying diseases.

Low blood pH: This may result from respiratory acidosis due to impaired pulmonary carbon dioxide elimination, as seen in severe pneumonia, pulmonary edema, respiratory muscle paralysis, or severe asthma. It may also stem from metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, uremic syndrome, or chronic diarrhea. Low urinary pH: Commonly observed in diabetes mellitus, systemic acidosis, hyperuricemia, gout, and chronic glomerulonephritis. Excessive intake of meat or vitamin C may also contribute to low urinary pH.

Clinically, correction of low pH primarily involves treating the underlying disease. Alkaline medications such as sodium bicarbonate may be used as adjunctive therapy. Additionally, affected individuals are advised to adjust their diet—moderating meat consumption and increasing intake of fresh vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, celery) and fruits (e.g., bananas, strawberries), as well as drinking ample water.
