Introduction
Dry, Dehydrated Skin: Mild skin fissures may appear, and facial stinging or burning sensations may occur during skincare. Often, the skin becomes excessively dry or dehydrated, necessitating prompt hydration to restore comfort and suppleness. Skin Allergy: In individuals with sensitive constitutions or those using cosmetics containing allergens, facial skin may exhibit redness, swelling, pain, itching, and maculopapular eruptions.

A burning, stinging sensation on the face may result from skin allergy, an open wound on the face, or skin dehydration. So, what causes this burning pain?

What Causes a Burning Sensation on the Face?

Skin dryness and dehydration: Mild micro-tears in the skin may occur due to excessive dryness or insufficient moisture, leading to stinging or burning sensations during skincare. In many cases, the skin is overly dehydrated and requires prompt hydration and soothing.

Skin allergy: Individuals with sensitive constitutions—or those using cosmetics containing allergens—may develop facial redness, swelling, pain, itching, and maculopapular rashes. Under medical guidance, gentle cleansing with lukewarm water, topical anti-inflammatory and antipruritic medications, and oral antihistamines (e.g., felodipine or loratadine) may be prescribed. Additionally, avoid spicy or irritating foods.

Skin barrier impairment: Over-cleansing the face can thin the stratum corneum and compromise the skin barrier, resulting in a burning sensation. Management includes calming sensitive skin and intensive moisturization.

Acute soft-tissue infection: Commonly seen in patients with facial folliculitis, especially when repeated pressure is applied, leading to localized suppurative infection. Oral or injectable antibiotics may be administered, along with topical applications such as “Ruyi Jinhuan Powder” or “Bactroban Ointment” to promote inflammation resolution. If an abscess develops, timely surgical incision and drainage are required to alleviate facial pain.

Furthermore, always follow your physician’s instructions regarding medication use; self-medication should be avoided to prevent additional complications. We hope this information has been helpful!
