Introduction
The side effects of Houttuynia cordata primarily manifest in two aspects: (1) allergic reactions and (2) renal damage. Specifically, both oral administration and intravenous injection of Houttuynia cordata may trigger allergic reactions, including drug-induced dermatitis, peripheral neuritis, allergic purpura, and anaphylactic shock. If not treated promptly, these reactions can pose life-threatening risks.

Houttuynia cordata (fishy-smelling herb) is a commonly consumed food in daily life, known for its diuretic and dampness-resolving, heat-clearing and detoxifying, and lung-ventilating and cough-suppressing effects. However, consumption of Houttuynia cordata carries certain health risks—what are its adverse effects?

What Are the Adverse Effects of Houttuynia Cordata?

The adverse effects of Houttuynia cordata primarily manifest in two areas: (1) allergic reactions and (2) renal toxicity. Specifically, both oral ingestion and intravenous administration of Houttuynia cordata may trigger allergic responses—including drug-induced dermatitis, peripheral neuritis, allergic purpura, and anaphylactic shock. If not treated promptly, these reactions can become life-threatening. Moreover, Houttuynia cordata contains certain toxic compounds, notably aristolactam—a substance that, with prolonged use, may cause irreversible kidney damage, leading to declining renal function and elevated serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. Therefore, long-term use of Houttuynia cordata—whether orally or via injection—is not recommended.

Houttuynia cordata is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with gastrointestinal irritation being its primary adverse effect. Additionally, allergic reactions to Houttuynia cordata in certain individuals constitute another major adverse effect. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to Houttuynia cordata (i.e., patients with known allergy should avoid it) and spleen-stomach deficiency (i.e., patients with weak digestive function should also avoid it). Houttuynia cordata is highly effective for clearing heat and eliminating toxins, but its nature is relatively cold.

Gaining a deeper understanding of the adverse effects and contraindications associated with Houttuynia cordata—and other common herbal ingredients—in daily life enables safer and more effective utilization, thereby promoting better health. We hope this response has been helpful to you.
