Although chicken contains relatively lower purine levels compared to other meats, it is still considered a moderately high-purine food among all foods. Therefore, in clinical practice—especially for patients with recurrent gouty arthritis or elevated serum uric acid levels—it is advisable to avoid chicken and other meats.

Chicken meat itself is highly nutritious and rich in protein; many people enjoy eating chicken in daily life. But for individuals with elevated uric acid levels, is it safe to consume chicken?

Can individuals with high uric acid eat chicken?

Patients with hyperuricemia should generally avoid eating chicken. As a type of meat, chicken contains relatively high levels of purines—a class of compounds metabolized into uric acid in the body. Although chicken has a lower purine content compared to other meats, it still falls within the medium-to-high purine category among all foods. Therefore, in clinical practice—especially for patients experiencing recurrent gouty arthritis or those with persistently elevated serum uric acid levels—chicken and other meats should be avoided as much as possible. For individuals whose serum uric acid levels are only mildly elevated or well-controlled within the normal range, small amounts of chicken may be consumed cautiously.

With rising living standards, the prevalence of hyperuricemia has increased annually, posing adverse health effects on affected individuals. Common complications include gouty arthritis and gouty nephropathy. Elevated serum uric acid levels also negatively impact cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health—and similarly affect glucose metabolism. Thus, prevention and management of hyperuricemia warrant serious attention. Controlling serum uric acid levels relies significantly on dietary management. When uric acid levels rise, patients are routinely advised to adopt strict dietary control, abstain from alcohol, and avoid high-purine foods such as seafood and animal offal.

In addition to comprehensive lifestyle adjustments, if serum uric acid levels remain above the normal reference range despite these measures, patients should seek care at a reputable medical institution and initiate pharmacologic uric acid–lowering therapy to minimize uric acid–related tissue damage.
