Introduction
In healthy individuals, the normal pulse rate and heart rate range from 60 to 100 beats per minute, and the pulse rate typically matches the heart rate. However, both pulse rate and heart rate can be influenced by numerous factors, including the body’s natural circadian rhythm, age, and sex. For example, among individuals of the same age, males generally have slower pulse and heart rates than females; similarly, older adults tend to have slower pulse and heart rates compared with younger individuals.

The heartbeat results from the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the heart. The number of heartbeats per minute is termed the heart rate. As blood flows through the heart and into various parts of the body, it causes pulsations in the arteries—these arterial pulsations can be felt as the pulse at superficial arterial sites on the body surface. So, what is the normal range for pulse rate and heart rate?

Normal Range for Pulse Rate and Heart Rate

In healthy adults, both pulse rate and heart rate typically fall within the range of 60–100 beats per minute (bpm), and they are generally equivalent. However, both pulse rate and heart rate can be influenced by numerous factors—including circadian rhythm, age, and sex. For example, among individuals of the same age, males tend to have lower pulse and heart rates than females; similarly, older adults generally exhibit slower pulse and heart rates compared with younger individuals. Pulse and heart rates are relatively slower during rest or recumbency—such as during sleep or upon waking in the morning—and tend to increase during the afternoon, peaking between 13:00 and 17:00. Additionally, slight increases in pulse and heart rate may occur with elevated body temperature, emotional excitement, or physical activity.

The normal ranges for heart rate and pulse in children vary with age. Generally, the younger the child, the faster the heart rate. As children grow older, their heart rates gradually slow down until they approach adult levels. In newborns under eight days old, the normal heart and pulse rate ranges from 130 to 154 bpm; for infants under one year, the average normal range is 120–140 bpm; and for children aged 1–3 years, the average normal pulse and heart rate is 100–120 bpm.

The normal ranges for heart rate and pulse also vary according to age, and specific reference values should be determined through professional medical evaluation at a healthcare facility. A physician can provide an accurate, age-appropriate interpretation based on clinical assessment. We hope this information has been helpful!
