Since elevated blood glucose during pregnancy can be harmful to both mother and fetus, what are the normal reference values for glucose testing during pregnancy?
Normal Glucose Values During Pregnancy
The upper limit of fasting blood glucose during pregnancy is 5.1 mmol/L. In non-pregnant individuals, the normal fasting blood glucose range is 3.9–6.1 mmol/L; however, during pregnancy, this upper limit decreases to 5.1 mmol/L. Therefore, the normal upper limit for fasting blood glucose in pregnancy is 5.1 mmol/L, and fasting blood glucose should be ≤5.1 mmol/L.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) Procedure: Prior to the test, alcohol, coffee, and tea should be avoided, and emotional stability should be maintained. An overnight fast of 10–14 hours is required. For at least three days before the test, carbohydrate intake should be no less than 150 g per day, and normal physical activity should be maintained. Blood is drawn while fasting before 8:30 a.m., followed by ingestion of 250–300 mL of water containing 75 g of glucose, which must be consumed within five minutes. Additional blood samples are collected at 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 hours after consuming the glucose solution (or a standardized meal such as steamed buns), and blood glucose levels are measured at each time point.
