Introduction
Mosquitoes’ selection of targets is unrelated to blood type, as they primarily detect carbon dioxide, heat, and certain chemical substances—not blood type. In other words, regardless of your blood type, simply breathing, sweating, or emitting body heat—and thereby releasing water vapor, carbon dioxide, acetone (found in sweat), and other chemical compounds—makes you attractive to mosquitoes.

During summer, mosquito populations increase, and some individuals seem particularly prone to mosquito bites—often finding it difficult to avoid being bitten. So, do mosquitoes show a preference for certain blood types?

Do mosquitoes prefer specific blood types?

Mosquitoes do not select their targets based on blood type. Instead, they primarily detect carbon dioxide, body heat, and certain chemical compounds emitted by the human body—factors unrelated to blood type. In other words, regardless of your blood type, as long as you are breathing, sweating, or generating body heat, the water vapor, carbon dioxide, acetone, and other chemicals in your sweat will attract mosquitoes. Once mosquitoes detect and approach you, their visual system begins to play a role. Mosquitoes’ vision is most active in low-light environments; thus, dark colors with weak reflectivity—especially black—are especially attractive to them.

At night, using a mosquito net is the safest and most effective method of mosquito prevention. When going outdoors during the day, insect-repellent sprays or applying mosquito-repelling lotions (e.g., floral water) to the skin can provide reliable protection. Numerous anti-mosquito products are currently available, including commercially sold mosquito-repellent wristbands.

If bitten by a mosquito or other insect, avoid excessive scratching to prevent secondary infection. Topical anti-itch ointments may be applied to alleviate local skin irritation. Mentholated oils (e.g., cooling oil or “wind oil essence”) can also help relieve itching and deter further bites. Always purchase insect-repellent medications from reputable pharmacies.
