Introduction
The affected area should be promptly rinsed thoroughly with clean water, which effectively reduces the irritation caused by capsaicin in chili peppers on human skin. Additionally, if symptoms are severe, washing with diluted saline solution or vinegar may accelerate recovery. If no significant improvement is observed after an extended period, further evaluation at a qualified hospital is necessary. Patients should actively cooperate with their physicians’ treatment.

Common foods can be prepared in various ways; however, chili peppers are notably spicy. Accidental contact of the hands with chilies may cause uncomfortable symptoms such as a burning or painful sensation on the skin. So, what should you do if your hands become irritated by chilies?

What to do if your hands are burned by chilies

Immediately rinse the affected area thoroughly with cool running water to effectively reduce the irritation caused by capsaicin—the active compound in chilies—on the skin. If symptoms are severe, washing with diluted saltwater or vinegar may help accelerate recovery. If no noticeable improvement occurs after a prolonged period, seek evaluation at a reputable hospital and actively cooperate with your physician’s treatment plan.

Generally, the burning sensation experienced after handling chilies results from capsaicin—a compound naturally present in chilies. During preparation, once capsaicin contacts the skin, it causes dilation of cutaneous capillaries, leading to redness and warmth, while also stimulating pain receptors and producing discomfort. Importantly, capsaicin is water-insoluble; thus, soaking in ice water or saltwater offers little relief. However, capsaicin is alkaline and lipid-soluble, readily dissolving in organic solvents—including cooking oil, makeup remover, or nail polish remover—thereby alleviating the burning sensation.

When experiencing hand irritation, never rinse with hot water, as this will intensify the burning and stinging sensations and hinder capsaicin removal. To prevent chili-induced hand irritation, wear disposable gloves when handling chilies—even during washing—and ensure thorough handwashing afterward.
