Introduction
Differences and Symptoms of Wind-Cold and Wind-Heat Common Colds The distinctions between wind-cold and wind-heat common colds typically manifest in both systemic and local symptoms. In contrast to wind-cold common cold—characterized by pathogenic cold invading the exterior, leading to marked aversion to cold, mild fever, and absence of sweating—wind-heat common cold arises from wind-heat pathogens obstructing the Lung’s function of dispersing and descending, resulting in prominent fever, mild aversion to cold, and other related symptoms. Antiviral medications such as Isatis Root Granules or Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian may be administered.

Everyone is familiar with the common cold, which sometimes resolves spontaneously. But what are the differences and symptoms between wind-cold and wind-heat colds?

Differences and Symptoms of Wind-Cold versus Wind-Heat Colds

The distinctions between wind-cold and wind-heat colds typically manifest in both systemic and local symptoms. In wind-cold colds, pathogenic cold accumulates externally, leading to pronounced aversion to cold, mild fever, and absence of sweating. Conversely, in wind-heat colds, impaired lung function results in marked fever, mild aversion to cold, and other symptoms. Wind-heat colds usually enter the body through the exterior (skin surface); thus, local symptoms involving the mouth, pharynx, and nose tend to be relatively mild—such as clear nasal discharge, a pale-white tongue coating, and dry mouth—without pharyngeal swelling or pain. In contrast, wind-heat invasion via the mouth and nose produces more prominent local manifestations, including yellowish nasal discharge, a light-yellow tongue coating, thick yellow sputum, thirst, and pharyngeal redness and soreness.

Treatment for wind-heat colds primarily focuses on promoting diaphoresis (sweating) to expel pathogens and dissipate heat. Commonly prescribed medications include Ganmao Ling Granules, Zheng Chaihu Yin Granules, and Ganmao Ruan Jiaonang (Cold Soft Capsules). For wind-cold colds, antiviral therapy is typically emphasized. Medications such as Banlangen Granules and Yinqiao Jiedu Pills (Honeysuckle-Forsythia Detoxifying Pills) may be administered to alleviate symptoms including sore throat, fever, and cough.

Patients are advised to rest adequately, maintain warmth, and ensure good indoor ventilation. Avoid overexertion, drink plenty of warm water to promote heat dissipation and sweating, facilitate toxin elimination, and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. Nutritious foods rich in protein—such as seaweed-and-egg soup or soy milk—may also be beneficial. We hope this article has been helpful. Wishing you joy in daily life and optimal health!
