Introduction
The life expectancy of patients with chronic leukemia depends on the disease’s progression and treatment response. For chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), median survival is approximately 40–48 months; for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), it is around 150 months. Chronic leukemias comprise several subtypes, with complex and multifactorial etiologies, making treatment particularly challenging. Moreover, therapeutic approaches differ significantly among the various types of chronic leukemia.

Compared to acute leukemia, chronic leukemia is less immediately life-threatening; however, it can still significantly impair health. So, how long can patients with chronic leukemia expect to live?

Life Expectancy in Chronic Leukemia

Survival duration in chronic leukemia depends on disease stage and treatment response. For chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), median survival is approximately 40–48 months; for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), median survival is around 150 months. Chronic leukemia comprises multiple subtypes with complex etiologies, making treatment challenging. Therapeutic approaches therefore vary significantly across different types.

The primary treatment for chronic leukemia is chemotherapy, which aims to eliminate malignant cells. Commonly used agents include hydroxyurea, busulfan, indirubin (extracted from the traditional Chinese herb *Indigo naturalis*), and meisoindigo. Other drugs—such as cytarabine and 6-mercaptopurine—show some efficacy in chronic leukemia but offer no distinct therapeutic advantage; their clinical utility remains limited due to relatively low effectiveness.

Interferon therapy is another treatment option for chronic leukemia. Interferons possess antiviral properties and may help alleviate leukemia symptoms. A key benefit of interferon therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is its ability to suppress abnormal clonal proliferation of leukemic cells. Radiation therapy may also be employed—particularly when splenomegaly is present and unresponsive to chemotherapy—in order to reduce spleen size. We hope this article has been helpful.
