Can you eat potatoes when you have diarrhea?
Diarrhea is a common symptom, colloquially referred to as “loose stools” or “the runs.” Patients with diarrhea should also pay close attention to their diet to prevent worsening of symptoms. So, can patients with diarrhea eat potatoes?
Can patients with diarrhea eat potatoes?
Patients with diarrhea may consume potatoes in moderation. Diarrhea leads to loss of water, electrolytes, and essential nutrients, and often significantly impairs gastrointestinal function. Potatoes are rich in starch and provide valuable vitamins, nutrients, and trace elements. However, potatoes are also considered gas-producing foods; excessive consumption may cause abdominal distension. Moreover, their high starch content makes them relatively difficult to digest—thus, potatoes are not recommended during the acute phase of diarrhea. During recovery, however, moderate intake is acceptable. Diarrhea patients are advised to consume potatoes in moderation. Additionally, preparation methods matter: spicy potato dishes are not recommended.

During illness, patients should follow a low-fat, low-residue diet: reduce daily fat intake to avoid overburdening digestion and placing extra strain on the gastrointestinal tract. Avoid high-fiber foods, which may stimulate intestinal motility and exacerbate diarrhea. Supplement with high-quality protein sources such as lean meat and eggs. Ensure timely rehydration to correct fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Additionally, incorporate spleen-strengthening and anti-diarrheal foods—for example, coix seed (Job’s tears), Chinese yam, and lotus seeds. Avoid spicy, stimulating, and cold foods.

During episodes of diarrhea, treatment should first focus on controlling the diarrhea itself. It is essential to identify the underlying cause—through blood tests, stool analysis, and, where indicated, abdominal ultrasound, CT scans, or colonoscopy.
