Which department should I visit at the hospital for headache and insomnia?
Insomnia is a common disorder in daily life and one of the most prevalent health concerns affecting modern individuals. Headache often accompanies insomnia. So, which department should you visit at the hospital for headache and insomnia?
Which Department Should You Visit for Headache and Insomnia?
There are numerous potential causes of headache and insomnia. Headaches may be functional (e.g., tension-type headache, migraine, or cluster headache) or organic (e.g., due to inflammation, tumors, or cerebrovascular disease). Patients presenting with both headache and insomnia should consult the Department of Neurology. A neurologist will conduct a series of diagnostic evaluations to establish an accurate diagnosis and perform differential diagnosis. Functional headaches—such as those of neurological or neurovascular origin—are managed by neurologists. Similarly, cases involving inflammation or cerebrovascular disorders are also treated within the Department of Neurology. However, if a tumor is identified, the patient should be referred to the Department of Neurosurgery for surgical or other appropriate interventions.

When headache and insomnia result from other underlying conditions—such as arteriosclerosis, hypertension, heart disease, or other systemic illnesses—multidisciplinary collaboration may be required. In such cases, the neurologist will coordinate referrals to the relevant specialty departments for joint assessment and integrated management. Generally, patients with headache and insomnia should first seek evaluation and treatment in the Department of Neurology; however, those experiencing acute or severe headache should promptly visit the Emergency Department.

After initial evaluation and diagnostic testing in the Emergency Department, urgent conditions—including intracranial hemorrhage or other cerebrovascular accidents causing headache—can be managed immediately in the emergency setting. Wishing you good health and happiness!
