Why do I experience constipation after taking orlistat?

Disease description:

Being slightly overweight has led to hypertension. While taking antihypertensive medication, I am also using orlistat for weight loss. However, I’ve noticed that after starting orlistat, I haven’t had a bowel movement. Why does orlistat cause constipation?

If constipation occurs while taking orlistat, the medication should be discontinued promptly and the patient monitored closely. Orlistat is an over-the-counter drug that carries certain side effects, primarily gastrointestinal—such as nausea and vomiting. Should bowel movements become difficult or infrequent, the drug should be stopped immediately and the patient observed. However, pathological conditions must also be considered as potential causes of constipation, including intestinal tumors and chronic enteritis.
