1. Platelet transfusion therapy is the fastest and most effective treatment for increasing platelet counts and is clinically indicated—particularly in patients with acute aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and acute leukemia.
2. Pharmacologic agents commonly used to increase platelet counts include recombinant human thrombopoietin, a cytokine that binds to receptors on megakaryocytes and promotes their proliferation and differentiation, thereby enhancing platelet production. This agent is frequently used in patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
