Can people with anemia not drink coffee at all?
Disease description:
My complexion is rather pale, and my menstrual flow is very light. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, I was diagnosed with anemia. My doctor advised me to pay attention to my diet—especially to avoid caffeine-containing foods and beverages—upon returning home. However, I am currently craving coffee quite intensely. Does this mean that individuals with anemia must completely abstain from coffee?
Patients with anemia may consume moderate amounts of coffee. Since coffee has a stimulating effect, anemic patients may drink it in moderation to help combat fatigue. However, caffeine in coffee inhibits iron absorption; if the body cannot adequately absorb iron, anemia symptoms may worsen. Therefore, individuals with anemia should limit their coffee intake and instead increase consumption of iron-rich foods to help alleviate anemia symptoms.
