Dr. Ou Chang
In addition to avoiding fava beans (broad beans), individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency—commonly referred to as “fava bean disease”—must also avoid certain traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), such as bezoar (niuhuang), bear bile (xiongdan), Coptis chinensis (Huanglian), pearl powder, and Notopterygium root (Chuanlian). Ingestion of these TCMs may trigger hemolysis; if not treated promptly, this can seriously compromise the patient’s health. Beyond these TCMs, several Western medications are also contraindicated, including certain antipyretics (e.g., aminopyrine and phenacetin), antimalarials (e.g., primaquine and quinine), and sulfonamide antibiotics.
