Why Do People with Hypothyroidism Feel Increasingly Fatigued and Gain Weight?
Disease description:
I have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I’ve always enjoyed exercising, but I’m gradually gaining weight. Why does hypothyroidism cause weight gain despite increased fatigue?
Hypothyroidism indicates reduced thyroid function, resulting in insufficient secretion of thyroid hormones in the body. This leads to metabolic abnormalities and symptoms such as cold intolerance, bradycardia, poor appetite, fatigue, lethargy, and edema. Currently, the observed weight gain is likely “false obesity” (i.e., non-adipose weight gain), most probably due to myxedema—a complication of hypothyroidism. We recommend consulting the Endocrinology Department at a local public hospital, where a physician can evaluate your condition and guide appropriate thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
