I’ve recently been experiencing pain in my chest and back area and suspect it might be pancreatitis. Could you please tell me where the pain from pancreatitis typically occurs?

Dr. Zhang Junfeng
Pancreatitis typically presents initially with pain. In acute pancreatitis, the pain is localized to the mid-upper left abdomen and radiates to the left shoulder and left lumbar–dorsal region. In biliary pancreatitis, pain begins in the right upper quadrant and gradually shifts toward the left side. When the entire pancreas is involved, the pain becomes more widespread, often presenting as a band-like sensation that radiates to the lumbar–dorsal region. Severely affected patients may develop extensive bluish-purple ecchymoses (e.g., Grey Turner’s sign) over the flanks, lower abdomen, and lumbar region. Occasionally, pain may be diffuse, involving the entire abdomen. In chronic pancreatitis, pain is typically located in the upper abdomen. In addition to pain, pancreatitis may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, and hypotension.
