What Are the Causes of Elevated Creatine Kinase?
Disease description:
I have undergone physical examinations for three consecutive years, and each time the results showed abnormally elevated creatine kinase (CK) levels. What are the possible causes of elevated creatine kinase?
Creatine kinase (CK) is most abundant in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle, followed by brain tissue; lower levels are found in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and kidneys. CK is primarily located in the cytoplasm and mitochondria and is a key enzyme directly involved in intracellular energy metabolism, muscle contraction, and ATP regeneration. Elevated CK levels may result from several causes:
1. Coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction, which cause marked CK elevation;
2. Trauma leading to muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis);
3. Chronic renal failure;
4. Hypothyroidism;
5. Excessive alcohol consumption.
