Disease description:

I’ve been feeling unwell recently and went to the hospital for a physical examination, where I was found to have low white blood cell count—this has left me quite anxious. Could you please advise what steps should be taken when white blood cell count is low?

A 45-year-old woman with a routine blood test showing low white blood cell (WBC) count: if the reduction is mild, it is generally not clinically significant and may be related to recent antibiotic use or transiently reduced immune function. However, if the WBC count is markedly decreased, other underlying conditions must be considered—such as advanced cancer undergoing chemotherapy or hematologic disorders—which can cause leukopenia. It is advisable to consult a hospital for further evaluation; bone marrow aspiration may be necessary to determine the exact cause of the low WBC count, followed by targeted treatment.
