Disease description:

Recently, I noticed small bony protrusions around my spine. After examination, it was confirmed to be mild vertebral osteophytosis (bone spur formation). However, I’m concerned that this condition may eventually make getting in and out of bed very difficult. Could you please explain what mild vertebral osteophytosis is?

Dr. Wang Guohua
Mild osteophyte formation in the cervical vertebral bodies is a degenerative change in bone tissue that occurs with aging. In most cases, osteophytes do not cause clinical symptoms and therefore require no treatment; moreover, there are no specific medications capable of halting their progression. Patients with osteophytes should modify unhealthy lifestyle habits—avoid prolonged sitting with the head bent forward or sustained bending at the waist—and instead engage regularly in outdoor aerobic activities. While walking, maintain an upright posture: chest out, head up, and arms swinging vigorously. Cultivating healthy habits can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with osteophytes.
