Can patients with epilepsy drink alcohol?

Feb 15, 2022 Source: Cainiu Health
Disease description:

I have had epilepsy since childhood, so I’m generally very cautious in my daily life. However, work-related social events often involve drinking alcohol at the dinner table, and sometimes I can’t refuse entirely and end up having a small amount. I’m concerned this might cause problems. May people with epilepsy drink alcohol?

People with epilepsy should ideally avoid alcohol consumption, as alcohol is a known stimulant that may trigger seizures. Excessive alcohol intake can also cause damage to the brain. Patients should take their antiepileptic medications regularly as prescribed and must not discontinue or reduce the dosage without medical guidance. Regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor treatment response and adjust medications promptly when needed. Additionally, patients should avoid exposure to triggers—such as emotional stress or colds caused by chilling—to help prevent seizure episodes.
